The first solo exhibition by Schalk van der Merwe.
Open to the general public from 5th – 14th December 2013, 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday
After 15 successful years in some of the top advertising agencies in Cape Town, Schalk van der Merwe recently embarked on a new creative career as a multi-disciplined conceptual artist. His passion and unique style was immediately recognised by renowned gallery owner and artist Catherine Christy. She showcased his first exhibition “The Secret Life of Flowers”, as well as some of his first paintings.
The photographic series was very well received and showed the diversity in Schalk’s work. Since embarking on his new career, Schalk has embraced the digital and social domain by submitting selected works to various blogs & on-line galleries. Director of the Saatchi Online Gallery UK, Rebecca Wilson, recently selected one of his pieces, Black Meriah, for the New Portraits Collection. This work is one of 67 featured portraits, chosen from a global collective of artists. Another gallery that has embraced his work is The Ghuba Gallery in Cape Town. Curator & owner Nel Ludwyk, sees this as being mutually beneficial as during the past few months, Schalk work is selling consistently well, with the most recent sale shipped off to Nairobi, Kenya. Due to a prolific work ethic and drive, new pieces are available on a regular basis. Schalk’s unique and bold style of painting is constantly evolving.
